Day care worker sentenced to probation in child’s death

Deborah Poindexter accepted a plea deal in Trumbull County Court in connection to the death of a 4-year-old child.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – A Youngstown woman will not go to jail in connection with the death of a child at a day care inside her home on Lennox Avenue.

As part of a plea agreement, Deborah Poindexter was sentenced to three years of probation. She had previously pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and endangering children.

Police say Poindexter called 911 in January because a 4-month-old child in her care stopped breathing. The child, Mehki Dawson, was lying on the floor when Poindexter went upstairs to answer the door, and she told police she believed that one of the other children had fallen on him.

The child’s mother was in court on Wednesday, and said she believes it was an accident. She asked for a lenient sentence.
