Long time Struthers councilman retires

Long time Struthers City Councilman Ron Mathews has retired.

STRUTHERS, Ohio (WKBN) – It was the final meeting for a long time Struthers City Council member. Ron Mathews is retiring after 26 years of service.

Mayor Terry Stocker presented Mathews with a plaque during the council meeting. He was also given a flag that once flew over the U.S. Capital Building.

Mathews served three terms as a 4th ward councilman and then 10 terms as councilman at large.

The 77-year-old councilman said he just loves the city and the people he represented.

“The people themselves in Struthers are always good. They were always nice,” he said. “I made some enemies, but they always came back and congratulated me for helping them out, what I could do for them.”

Mathews said he never held a fundraiser to pay for his campaigns. He credits his family for helping out at the polls on Election Day.
