Man arrested after toddler found alone on New Middletown road

NEW MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – A man was arrested after a toddler, wearing only pajamas, was found in the middle of the road. Police said he had been outside for at least a couple of hours.

New Middletown Police Chief Vincent D’Egidio said people spotted the 3-year-old outside on Sandy Court around 5 p.m. Tuesday. Officers located the guardian of the child, identified as 32-year-old William Bish, who was asleep in his apartment at the time.

D’Egidio said Bish fell asleep around 1 p.m., after putting the child down for a nap. He told police he drank the night before and smoked marijuana around 3 a.m. that morning.

The child was taken to Akron Children’s Hospital for evaluation, due to exposure to the weather. Mahoning County Children Services was notified and is investigating.

Police say Bish and his wife have temporary custody of the child. The child was released to his aunt from the hospital.

Bish was charged with possession of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and child endangering. He is scheduled for arraignment in Struthers Municipal Court next week.
