EAST PALESTINE, Ohio (WKBN) – Spanish teacher Nicole Petro said she was waiting for a gift from Santa in order to buy supplies for her classroom, but thanks to WKBN’s Caring for Our Community – Creative Classroom contest, Christmas will come early for East Palestine High School students in Petro’s class.
“This is the best Christmas present!” Petro said, when surprised with the grant in her classroom.
Petro applied for the Creative Classroom grant to obtain art supplies for her Spanish class. She said teaching the Spanish language through art is a unique and memorable way to teach her students.
She will use the $500 to buy large rolls of paper. Petro said the students will draw different body parts on the paper by tracing themselves, and they will then label the parts using Spanish words.
She also plans to purchase a laminating machine, sheets and dry erase markers.
“I love to hand-make different games for my classroom,” Petro wrote in her contest entry. “A great option is to laminate the paper or ‘board game,’ so the students can use dry erase markers and erase easily. The students seem to really love this, and it is good for the environment because you are able to re-use all of the materials instead of printing out paper after paper.”
Petro is a first-year teacher at East Palestine and says she is “blessed” to do the job she loves every day. She was surprised with the Creative Classroom prize in her classroom.
