Salem mom receives surprise from son deployed in Afghanistan

Michelle Henry of Salem receives a special holiday message from her sons deployed in Afghanistan.

SALEM, Ohio (WKBN) – Every day is a struggle for Michelle Henry, who has two sons deployed in Afghanistan. Over the holidays, she misses them even more.

She says being without her sons, Brandon Henry and Michael Davis, is an emotional roller coaster.

“It’s hard. I wanted them to do something where they are here, where they are always with me. But I am really proud of them, and your pride has to override fear.”

Michelle relies on technology, getting to talk to them once in a while through email or text message.

“You have no idea what that text or that call or those words mean. They mean the world.”

Little did she know, Michael had seen a post that WKBN shared on Facebook, asking if anyone had family members who are deployed and how they celebrate the holidays without them.

He wanted to give his mom a special Christmas video message.

“I just want to wish my mom a Happy Holidays,” he said. “I want to thank you for support throughout the years and your current support during this deployment. I love you and I’ll see you soon.”

Even though her boys are thousands of miles away, they still found a way to wish Michelle a Merry Christmas.

“I just want to thank them for doing that and for thinking of me, because it made my Christmas a lot better,” she said. “And I love you Mike for everything you do, and Brandon, you two are wonderful.”

Michael is set to come home in January, and Brandon in May. Michelle says she is already counting down the days until she can wrap her arms around them.
