AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – A bet on a long shot paid off for some at the Mahoning Valley Race Course on Monday afternoon.
R B Wild Promise, a 206-to-1 long shot, came in first in the seventh race. A $2 bet for that horse to win paid $415, according to Hollywood Gaming.
For those playing a $0.50 trifecta, picking the top three horses in the exact order, the payout was $7,000.
Monday also marked new all-time record, with $1.8 million bet on races at the Austintown track. It was the third time in a week that more than a $1 million in bets were placed on horses at the Mahoning Valley Race Course.
Ridden by Luciano Hernandez, the four-year-old Florida bred son of D’Wildcat rallied outside of horses entering the stretch and prevailed late in a calvary charge to the finish in which the top six finishers were separated by just one length.
Gwendolyn Crosser, the trainer, recently passed her trainer’s test after working at nearby Mountaineer Racetrack. She said she was thrilled by the win.
“I am on cloud nine. I can’t believe he won,” Crosser said. “It was so exciting, I was yelling, ‘C’mon boy, get up,’ and he did”
Crosser said she has had R B Wild Promise for more than four months and called him a “cool horse” with a “great personality.”
“You can be sure he will be getting extra carrots and apples tonight,” she said on Monday.
The win was the second of the year and third overall for R B Wild Promise. With the $5,160 winner’s share of the purse, he has now earned more than $22,790 from 16 starts.
