YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – A small explosion by Stambaugh Stadium caused Tuesday’s power outage on the Youngstown State campus, according to officials.
Tuesday, there was temporarily no power to the campus for the second day in a row. Monday’s outage was planned while workers installed a new power-switching station.
Monday, the university’s high-voltage lines had to be shut down for about 12 hours. But when the power turned back on Tuesday, that caused a short circuit in part of the system. The university found the problem when someone spotted smoke rolling out of a manhole cover near Fifth Avenue.
Power to the campus has been restored Tuesday afternoon. The university will reopen Wednesday, and another power outage is scheduled for Sunday.
Workers need to finish installing the switch gear Tuesday and hope to do so without explosions.
