YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Thursday night is the night First Night Youngstown has planned all year for: New Year’s Eve.
Three hundred sixty-four days of preparation go into the celebration going on throughout downtown Youngstown, which has already started Thursday with swimming at the YMCA and skating at the Covelli Centre.
Burn barrels being placed, signs to help direct pople, entertainment acts checking in, and the ball being moved are just a few things that are done throughout the day. There are nearly 100 people working Thursday night to help set up, and that number does not include the performers and employees at the participating 15 venues.
Youngstown events coordinator Michael McGiffin said that he and event organizers had to convince city leaders to move the fireworks to the Market Street Bridge, which they agreed to.
With everything ironed out and ready to go, McGiffin hopes downtown can continue the success its been having, hoping to see an increase in the number of people who come out.
First Night kicked off at 4 p.m. and ends around 12:30 a.m. For a full schedule of events you can visit First Night’s website.
