Healthy resolutions lead to decrease in candy sales

Local candy store owners say sales drop at the start of each new year.

NILES, Ohio (WKBN) – A common New Year’s resolution is to get in shape. Many start eating healthier and working out.

Unfortunately for local candy stores, this can mean sales will drop.

Todd Markovich, owner of Jotoddi’s Candy and Gift Shop in Niles, says he sees a decrease in sales at the start of each new year.

“I think people make that healthy resolution, forgetting the happy part, that you also need a little bit of sweets in there too. I mean, you can eat it in moderation.”

However, people are quick to forget those healthy habits. Markovich says sales pick up again in February, just in time for Valentine’s Day.
