EMT struck by ATV on Youngstown sidewalk

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Police are looking for the drivers of two ATVs, one of which is believed to have intentionally struck an emergency medical technician on the sidewalk.

The Life Fleet EMT was at the scene of a crash in which a woman’s vehicle was struck by a van that left the scene following the crash. The crash occurred on Shirley Road and Poland Avenue around 8 p.m. Thursday, according to a Youngstown Police report.

The woman was not injured in the crash, and she declined medical treatment. The EMT told police he was standing on the Center Street bridge filling out paperwork on the crash when he saw two black in color ATVs traveling at a high rate of speed on the sidewalk.

The EMT told police that he was struck by one of the ATVs as he tried to jump out of the way. The ATV dragged him about five to 10 feet and drove away, according to the police report.

The EMT said the woman who was struck by the van then got into her vehicle and drove away, without asking whether he was OK. He believed the ATV struck him intentionally.

Police said the EMT had ripped pants, cuts on his hands, and his glasses were damaged. He was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital for what appeared to be minor injuries.

The driver of the ATV was wearing a helmet, so he was unable to be identified at the time the report was filed.
