Security breach could impact taxpayers in Youngstown and Girard

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – People who filed income taxes in Youngstown and Girard during or before June 2012 could be victims of a security breach.

The breach happened at the Regional Income Tax Agency (RITA). Backup DVDs were being destroyed in November and one was missing from its case.

The agency believes the DVD was destroyed but can’t be sure.

The disc contained taxpayer names, addresses, social security numbers and possibly birth dates.

About 50,000 people could be affected.

RITA is sending notices to those impacted and will offer free credit monitoring and identity protection for one year.
