WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) – We are one month away from the OHSAA’s Selection Sunday for boys’ basketball. Teams are currently vying for seeding in next month’s district tournament. Here’s a look at the Warren District.
Selection Meeting: Sunday, February 7
Division III – Warren District
Projected Seeding as of January 6
-The Vikings have won eight in a row since suffering their season opening matchup with Berkshire (72-66). LaBrae has put together a resume which includes victories over Garrettsville Garfield, Champion, Girard and Newton Falls.
-The Badgers are strong once again, proving so by knocking off LaBrae on the road on November 28. Since then, Berkshire has been dropped twice (by Cathedral Latin and by Unioto).
(3) Newton Falls (8-2)
-The Tigers’ two losses came by a total of 12 points against two quality opponents (LaBrae and Jefferson). Newton Falls has recorded wins against Girard, Brookfield, Champion and Garrettsville Garfield this season.
(4)Garrettsville Garfield (7-2)
-Garfield has won seven of eight which includes a victory over West Branch (by 18). The G-Men have won four games away from home.
-The Golden Flashes have lost three of their last four games but they still don’t have a bad loss on the schedule and have wins over Girard and JFK to show for their effort.
-Brookfield is in the same boat as Champion. Not a bad loss to speak of and more good than bad on the slate. The Warriors defeated Niles on Tuesday by eighteen to give them their marquee win.
(7)Mineral Ridge (6-2)
-Ridge lost back-to-back games to McDonald and Mathews in mid-December but has been perfect otherwise. The Rams have won two in a row and hold a two-point win over Sebring (54-52) on December 11.
-Liberty has lost six of their last seven games. They hold a December 1st victory over Girard (59-56) and did not have a bad loss until Tuesday’s setback to previously-winless Hubbard (54-44).
(9)Grand Valley (3-5)
-Grand Valley has lost three straight since notching three wins in a row which included a victory over Py Valley (61-45). The Mustangs also defeated Mathews by 21 this year.
-Cardinal defeated Grand Valley in their second game of the season (72-60). The Huskies snapped a six-game losing streak on December 30 when they topped Newbury (59-34).
-Rootstown has played a difficult schedule with matchups with Garfield, Alliance, South Range and Mogadore within the last three weeks.
(12)Pymatuning Valley (4-4)
-The Lakers began the season with an 0-3 mark. Since then, they’ve won four of five including a 18-point win over Windham.
