Hundreds of students compete in Canfield speech tournament

Hundreds of students competed in the Canfield speech and debate tournament.

CANFIELD, Ohio (WKBN) – Nearly 450 students from Mahoning County were at Canfield High School on Saturday for the annual Speech and Debate Tournament.

They represented 18 high schools across the Valley, one in Cleveland and another in Pittsburgh.

Jeremy Hamilton, director of the debate, says this event is a great opportunity for students to express themselves.

“They can speak, they can act, they can debate or they can discuss politics. There’s something for everybody and it gives them confidence, it gives them friends and it helps them with skills they’ll need in college and professional careers.”

The participants had been preparing for this day since last September.

The Kiwanis Club of Western Mahoning County sponsored the two-day tournament.
