COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – U.S. Sen. Rob Portman has endorsed his fellow Ohio Republican, Gov. John Kasich, for president.
Portman, of Cincinnati, said in a Saturday announcement he chose Kasich as someone who could get things done.
Portman praised Kasich’s efforts in Congress to balance the federal budget and his leadership in Ohio, saying that under Kasich, the state’s unemployment rate is now lower than the national rate.
Kasich and Portman served in Congress together in the 1990s. Portman had been staying neutral in the race. The Kasich campaign said it was excited to have Portman aboard.
Kasich is taking his Republican presidential campaign to Iowa on Sunday with the state’s first-in-the-nation caucuses less than a month away.
