Area High School Boys’ Basketball: Valley Preview
For Tuesday, January 12, 2016

Poland (4-1, 9-1) at Boardman (2-3, 5-4)
…In each of Boardman’s past three setbacks, the Spartans have dropped contests by an average of 2.7 points (against Canfield, Kenston, Howland). Boardman has posted a perfect 3-0 record at home this season. Besides Poland’s 3-point loss to Harding last Tuesday, the Bulldogs have been perfect. In the five games Poland has played away from home they’re 5-0 and have held their opposition to an average of 46.4 points. Coach Ken Grisdale is seeking his 400th win.

Fitch (5-4) at Cardinal Mooney (6-2)
…The Falcons could easily be 7-2 right now if it wasn’t for a couple of close losses to Poland (54-52) on December 22 and to Canfield (48-47) a week later. To beat Mooney on the road would give Fitch the marquee victory they’ve been in search of. The Cardinals rebounded nicely over the weekend by dominating their game with Hubbard on the road (56-29) after falling to Ursuline (67-58) on Friday.

Maplewood (5-4) at Bristol (9-1)
…The Rockets were 5-2 before they lost back-to-back contests with Lutheran East (by 30) and at home to Grand Valley (by 16). Bristol is a perfect 7-0 at home. In those contests, the Panthers have outscored their opponents by a margin of 39 points.

Wellsville (2-1, 10-2) at Southern (1-1, 6-5)
…The Tigers were riding a seven-game winning streak before they were upended by McDonald on Saturday (89-56). Despite losing their last home matchup to South Range on Friday (75-61), Southern has been tough to beat on the home court. The Indians fell to McDonald by 6 in early-December. The Indians face a tough three-game stretch on the road after this one which includes trips to Lisbon, Carrollton, and Leetonia.

Mineral Ridge (2-1, 7-2) at Lowellville (2-1, 7-4)
…Ridge has posted three-straight wins since falling to Mathews and McDonald in back-to-back games in mid-December. The Rams have registered wins against Columbiana, Sebring and Western Reserve this year. Lowellville is coming off of 7-point win at Sebring (60-53) on Friday. The victory was their 5th in a row.
