Youth bocce league continues to grow in Struthers

A youth bocce league continues to grow in Struthers.

STRUTHERS, Ohio (WKBN) – Thirty-three kids gathered at St. Anthony’s banquet hall in Struthers on Sunday to play their last bocce game of the season.

The children range in age from three to eight years old, but they are already fierce competitors.

“You gotta work together with teamwork and it’s so fun having new friends, and making new friends at bocce,” said 6-year-old Leah Markotan. “You get to knock other people’s balls out, and it’s just fun when your parents scream and yell at you and say, ‘Yay! Go Leah!'”

The league started in July and this is the second session. Organizer Brandy Jackson admits getting the idea off the ground took some work.

“We kicked around the idea of starting a kid’s league, and it has caught on immensely. It keeps growing every session…we get calls frequently about more kids and making it larger.”

Jackson says the games will resume in May.
