Local labor talks at GM Lordstown picking up momentum

LORDSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Even with a new national contract in place between GM and the UAW, it’s not all labor peace at Lordstown.

Both UAW Locals 1112 and 1714 are involved in contract talks over local issues. Meetings are underway on Thursday.

There’s no deadline to get those deals done, but WKBN has confirmed that Local 1714 has submitted a request to the international union to authorize a strike. 1714 President Robert Morales says that’s a typical move made during contract talks.

Morales would not discuss the local issues that are still to be resolved.

Morales says in the unlikely event of a strike by a union local, other locals would still be required to go to work.

Talks have been underway since August. The UAW represents about 3,000 people in Local 1112 and 1,300 in Local 1714.
