Pennsylvania man, 34, held on charges he shoved grandma, 82

MONONGAHELA, Pa. (AP) – A western Pennsylvania man has been jailed on charges he pushed down his 82-year-old grandmother, breaking her hip, during an argument about laundry.

The public defender for 34-year-old Richard Burella Jr. declined comment on the aggravated assault and other charges he’ll face at a preliminary hearing Jan. 27.

Carroll Township police say Burella’s grandmother had called them several times in the past few years with complaints about Burella, but none as serious as the incident on Jan. 15.

That’s when he allegedly pushed her in the kitchen causing her to fall backward and break her hip. She told police Burella refused to call 911 for about 90 minutes, accusing her of faking the injury.

Burella’s grandmother remains hospitalized after hip surgery. Burella remained in the Washington County jail on Thursday.
