Mosquito Lake Polar Plunge raises funds for Special Olympics

People jump into Mosquito Lake in Cortland to raise money for Special Olympics.

CORTLAND, Ohio (WKBN) – Despite the chilly weather, some locals decided it was time for a dip in Mosquito Lake.

The 10th annual Mosquito Lake Polar Plunge drew in hundreds of onlookers and daredevil swimmers on Saturday to raise money for Special Olympics Ohio.

Plungers obtained monetary pledges to earn the privilege of jumping into the frigid waters.

Most participants came in teams, including the 21 students from Maplewood High School and their superintendent and principal, who were very pleased with their contributions.

“We raised $1,723.50, which is $700 more than our total last year,” said high schooler Abby Higgins.

This was the Maplewood student’s fifth year participating in the plunge.
