Former owner of Boardman A&W, “Saxey the Clown,” dies

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – The former owner of the Boardman A&W Family Restaurant passed away on Wednesday at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, Virginia, according to his Becker Funeral Homes obituary.

Richard “Saxey” Thompson was 72.

A 1961 graduate of Howland High School, Thompson also attended Youngstown State University.

Thompson operated the Boardman A&W Restaurant from 1972 until its closure in 2011. WKBN spoke to Thompson in December of 2011about his time at the restaurant.

“I’ve been with A&W 53 years. I love it, or I wouldn’t be doing it all these years,” he told WKBN then.

Thompson served in the U.S. Army and played numerous instruments in the Army Band, according to his obituary. He was a member of various local organizations, such as Aut Mori Grotto, in which he appeared as “Saxey the Clown” in the former Aut Mori Grotto Circus, held at the Struthers Field House.

He was a member of the rock band, “The Shadows,” and three-piece combo, “Penny Arcade.”

Calling hours for Thompson will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and 10 to 10:45 a.m. Wednesday at Becker Funeral Home. The Poland Lodge will conduct a service at 7 p.m. on Tuesday
