Several Ohio educators met inside the Mahoning County Courthouse in December to define what it means to be a teacher. The debate centered around the appointment of Carol Staten (pictured), a part-time administrator, to the district's academic distress commission. According to the state of Ohio, the commission has to include a Youngstown City Schools' teacher.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – A judge has ruled that Youngstown City School’s board president must choose a new person for the district’s academic distress commission.

Back in November, president Brenda Kimble named Carol Staten to serve on the commission fulfilling the requirement of a teacher.

But Staten is a substitute principal, and the teacher’s union argued she did not meet the requirement.

Judge Lou D’Apolito agreed with the union and has given Kimble two days to pick a new person to fill what was going to be Staten’s spot.

The academic distress commission will then move forward with making decisions for the district.
