Youngstown couple sentenced in child neglect case

A couple was sentenced in Youngstown, Ohio for nearly staving a baby to death.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – A Youngstown couple was sentenced Wednesday on child endangering charges after prosecutors say they nearly starved a baby to death.

Marquis Allen and Cherie Jones were both sentence to five years probation. They must also serve 100 hours of community service. The couple is also required to take parenting classes.

The couple was permitted to address the court during sentencing where Allen apologized for his actions saying he wished he had been more prepared for the care of the baby and is relieved that she is doing better now.

“You know, she is gaining weight, and she is running and jumping. It makes me happy and you I am sorry for anything that we did,” Allen said.

She weighed just over 9 pounds when she was 1 year old.

Jennifer Kollar, spokeswoman for Mahoning County Children Services, said the couple is not a licensed foster family, but the mother of the baby placed the girl in the couple’s care.
