Poland grinds out OT win over Boardman

The Spartans forced OT as time expired in regulation, but the Bulldogs held on for the win Tuesday.

Poland, OH (WKBN) – The Poland boys basketball team needed overtime to fend off Boardman, 75-67 Tuesday in All American Conference Red Division play.

It was a back and forth first half, as the Bulldogs could not pull away early. Sloppy play on both sides resulted in a low-scoring first half, tied at 23 heading to the break.

Both teams traded leads throughout the second half, as Poland took a 6 point lead in the final minute. But missed free throws and a Poland technical foul gave the Spartans a chance.

Down two with time winding down, Holden Lipke hit a jumper as time expired to send it to overtime, tied at 60. The Bulldogs outscored Boardman, 15-7 in the extra frame to hold on for the win.

Matt Baker led Poland with 26 points, while Jacob Burns added 12 and Mike Gajdos 11. Boardman was led by J.R. Ryan with a game-high 28 points, while Lipke had 21.

Poland improves to 14-3 overall, while Boardman falls to 7-10 on the season.
