BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – As part of the national event, Give Kids a Smile, Dental Express in Boardman decided to help local kids with free dental care on Saturday.
“Ages as young as we can get to sit in the chair, up to about 14 years old, whose parents would like to have an exam, cleaning, X-ray,” said office manager Amanda Gushura. “If they have any issues, we’ll be happy to point them in the right direction.”
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly one in four children aged 2 to 11 have untreated cavities in their baby teeth.
As the day went on, there was a larger than expected turnout; the office saw about 60 kids.
“We did over $15,000 worth of uncovered services on these children,” said dental hygienist Danielle Wine.
This was the clinic’s first time hosting the event. They said it was a great opportunity for kids who may not have dental insurance. Many who came in had never been to the dentist before.
“I’ve had 10-year-olds come in today that have never been to the dentist, 5-year-olds, and they had a blast,” Wine said.
Nationally, there were over 1,200 Give Kids a Smile events as of Saturday, and about 285,000 kids participating.
