COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Police in central Ohio say they fatally shot an armed man who was fleeing officers and refused to drop a gun.
Columbus police say 23-year-old Marese Collins was shot multiple times around 12:30 a.m. Sunday.
A police statement says officers responded to a report of an armed man threatening others. Officers were told the man fled the neighborhood in an SUV.
A police cruiser followed a speeding SUV that matched the description until the driver stopped and fled on foot.
Police say officers converged on the man in the rear of a house. They say officers ordered him numerous times to drop his weapon and multiple witnesses heard the commands. Officers say Collins was shot after ignoring their commands and died at the scene. A firearm was recovered.
