Mahoning County offers safe sleeping for infants

The Cribs for Kids program offers free pack and plays to WIC eligible mothers

Mahoning County officials are offering free pack and plays for new mothers.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – In light of the tragic death of a newborn this week who was bitten by dog while lying in a laundry basket, the Mahoning County District Board of Health wants residents to know about resources available for new mothers.

The Cribs for Kids program offers free pack and plays to WIC eligible mothers who are at least 32 weeks into a pregnancy. Mothers with children less than one year old and under 30 pounds are also eligible.

The mothers must attend a one hour training class. The classes are held every Thursday and instruct new mothers on how to properly put together and use the pack and play.

“The big stress is that the infant has a safe place to sleep. We know that the infant mortality rate here in Mahoning County is very high. This is one measure that we are aiming to help reduce that rate,” said Chris Cunningham, director of nursing.

The Mahoning County Coroner’s Office ruled that a baby that died early Sunday died after being bit in the head by a dog.

Mahoning County Deputy Coroner Joseph Ohr said the newborn’s death was an accident and not an attack, as the dog was trying to pick up the child and has never been vicious. Rather, the baby, Aidan, died due to a puncture wound to the head at his home on Valorie Drive on the south side of Youngstown.

The infant’s mother, Kristy Grim, said she was sleeping on a couch near the baby, who was lying in a laundry basket that was used as a makeshift crib.
