WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) – An employee of the Trumbull County Engineer’s Office will not remain on the Board of Elections while his boss running for office there.

Ken Kubala told the Trumbull County Democrats on Thursday that he will step down, saying he didn’t want to put his job in jeopardy. The move comes after Ohio’s Attorney General said there is a conflict of interest, even though Trumbull County Engineer Randy Smith is running unopposed to be re-elected.

The Democratic Party voted on Thursday to replace Kubala with Diana Marchese on the county’s Board of Elections. Marchese is retiring as Trumbull County Recorder at the end of the year.

“They’re governed by the Ohio Revised Code, and so is the Recorder’s Office,” Marchese said. “We have to follow over 1,000 sections of the code, so that in itself shows I would know how to see an answer from the code.”

Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted must confirm the recommendation before Marchese can join Trumbull County’s Board of Elections.
