Tuesday last day for voter registration in Ohio

Due to the storm, the Columbiana and Trumbull County board of elections had a lower amount of in-person visits than in the past

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – There are only 28 days remaining until the Ohio primaries, and Tuesday was the last day to register to vote.

Boards of Elections throughout the state were open until 9 p.m. to allow people to register, or change their name or address.

With the recent snowstorm that hit the Valley Monday night, the Columbiana and Trumbull County board of elections had a lower amount of in-person visits than in the past.

“I know some people who called in that planned on coming and wanted to know what their options were if they didn’t make the trek out,” said Columbiana County Board of Elections Director Adam Booth.

Booth said the deadline day is usually as busy as any other day, though.

“They’ve been registering for the last month, or several months, since the last election,” he said. “The debates have been on. People know an election is coming.”

Directors said Tuesday was more for prepping absentee ballots than anything else.

Bins filled with absentee ballots are ready to ship out. Nearly 1,000 in Trumbull County, and around 700 in Columbiana County will be sent out Wednesday.

Booth said voting absentee is popular because of the convenience.

“If you know you’re going to be on call, you’re going to be out of town, you don’t want to chance the weather,” he said.

Voters have until the Saturday before the election to fill out the application to vote absentee. The absentee application can be found on your local Board of Elections’ website, at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles or at the local library.
