BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – Boardman Police arrested a man Friday night who they say tried to swallow a bag of heroin before running from police and punching an officer.
According to a police report, Boardman Police Sergeant Paul Grimes pulled over a car with three people in it on Sheridan Rd. late Friday night. Grimes called for backup, saying the driver was trying to exit the car and he smelled marijuana. Patrolman Evan Beil arrived and the officers searched the car, reportedly finding small pieces of marijuana.
One of the men, Darius Dates, 18, exited the car and tried to swallow something, which police later identified as heroin, according to the police report. When Patrolman Beil ordered Dates to spit out the substance and he did not, according to Beil’s testimony in the report, Beil tried to take him to the ground. Dates got free and ran, but Beil eventually used his taser on Dates and tackled him. Beil stated that Dates punched him in the face, and Beil returned the favor before putting him in handcuffs.
Police charged Dates with resisting arrest, obstructing official business, assault on a police officer, tampering with evidence and drug abuse.
No one answered a call placed to a phone number listed for Dates on the police report, and the voicemail box for the number was full.
