ITHACA, New York (KWQC) – A city in New York has unveiled a controversial plan in an attempt to curb its drug use and addiction problems.
Ithaca Mayor Svante Myrick announced a four-part plan to combat the growing heroin epidemic on Wednesday. The plan includes a supervised heroin injection site facility, which would be the first of its kind in the United States. The controversial facility has support, but it is also drawing criticism.
“There are other methods and reactionary and elected officials who are too afraid to tell the truth,” said Myrick. “People who are too afraid of the science are the ones standing between them and the science that can save their lives.”
Myrick says the facility would primarily be funded by the government, but additional support will come from private donors.
