ELLSWORTH TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKBN) – The Ohio State Highway Patrol Canfield Post is investigating a two vehicle crash that killed one person.
The crash was reported on US 224 just east of Duck Creek Road at around 11:47 p.m. Saturday. A portion of 224 was shut down for about six hours on Sunday.
Randy Storm, 29, of North Benton was driving a Dodge Durango and died in the crash. Storm’s passenger, 25-year-old Aaron Conner of Alliance, was transported to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Youngstown with non-fatal injuries. Neither were wearing seatbelts.
John Desellem, 52, of Canfield was driving a GMC 2500 and sustained minor injuries. He was treated at the scene. Desellem’s passenger, 24-year-old Nicholas Colapietro of Youngstowm, was not injured. Both were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Preliminary investigation shows Storm was traveling west on US 224 and Desellem was traveling east on US 224. According to police, Storm traveled left of center and struck Desellem. Storm came to rest in the westbound lane. Desellem traveled off the south side of the roadway, struck a road sign and came to rest in the ditch.
Police say alcohol and distracted driving played a role in the crash.
The Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office, and Berlin and Ellsworth Fire Departments assisted at the crash scene.
The crash remains under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
