NILES, Ohio (WKBN) – The Niles Police Department is being handcuffed by a further manpower shortage.

The Tribune Chronicle reports that both Police Chief Rob Hinton and Captain Ken Criswell have taken extended sick leaves.

Mayor Tom Scarnecchia says the two cannot be replaced until their sick time ends. He tells the newspaper he’s not certain how long that might be.

Safety Director Paul Hogan claims that road patrols aren’t impacted since the two weren’t doing patrol work.

Captain Jaison Holland is now the acting chief.

The Niles PD has 27 officers today. It had 37 sworn officers in 2010.
