Name of man killed by Johnstown police released

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (AP) – Authorities in western Pennsylvania have released the name of a man shot and killed by police officers in Johnstown last week.

Cambria County coroner Jeffrey Lees said 41-year-old Daniel Burkhardt died of multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body.

Police said three officers responded to the city’s West End on Wednesday evening after a report of an armed man. Spokesman Clifford Greenfield said the man had a knife in each hand and refused to drop them as he advanced toward officers. Greenfield said police deployed shotgun bean bag rounds and a stun gun but fired after the man continued to advance.

Three officers have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Lees said his office is reviewing medical records to determine Burkhardt’s mental status.
