WAMPUM, Pa. (WKBN) – Wampum Mayor Jeff Steffler said he wouldn’t drink his town’s water on the weekends due to persistent discoloration.

Heather Viviano, who has lived in Wampum for 11 years, said the water problems have been going on for years. She refuses to drink the water.

“I don’t know what’s in it, that’s exactly why,” she said. “I don’t know what’s going to happen to me. I don’t know if there’s lead in it.”

When contacted on Wednesday, the mayor said the problem has been going on since October, but he is not sure what is causing the issues.

“Obviously, if you pour a glass of water and it’s brown, I wouldn’t drink it. Would you? But when it clears up, it’s perfectly fine,” he said.

Steffler said the water in the tiny Lawrence County community is brown on the weekends and has particles in it. He said he wouldn’t bathe or drink in it on the weekend, but during the week, the water is fine.

He said the borough is trying to get money to get new water pumps, but he said he is unsure of the costs or any other details of the transaction. He was unsure of when the issue would be fixed.

In the meantime, Viviano said she can’t bathe on the weekends.

“Half the time, when you bathe with it, it’s brown, so you feel like you’re getting a muddy bath. It’s gross. It’s really gross,” she said.
