CANFIELD, Ohio (WKBN) – If you were planning to do some early Saint Patrick’s Day celebrating this weekend, the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Canfield post is doing some planning too.

Their plan calls for extra patrols from now through next weekend. Federal funding will help pay for the overtime troopers put in.

They will also be working with the Mahoning County OVI Task Force, rolling out a checkpoint and saturation patrols.

State patrol Canfield post commander Lt Jerad Sutton says they’re seeing more OVI activity recently.

“This year in Mahoning County, OVI arrests are up about 44 percent,” says Sutton. “We’ve arrested 100 OVIs this year so far. Our fatal crashes in Mahoning County; we’ve had three so far, and two out of the three involved a driver who was drug impaired of alcohol impaired.”

The patrol reminds you to assign that designated driver before the party or night out.
