2016 Ursuline Baseball Preview
Head Coach: Matt Weymer, 1st season at Ursuline
2015 Record: 16-6

More: High School Baseball previews from other teams

Key Losses: Two of the team’s outfielders – Vito Penza and Zach Patton – have graduated as did Joel Hake.

Key Returnees: The Irish return two elite pitchers – Vinnie Lucente and Vito Petrillo – as well as the team’s backstop (senior Drew Potesta) and a quartet of other .300-hitters (Petrillo, Logan Pullin, Gianni Quattro, Alex Schlosser). Lucente tossed a complete game, 9-strikeout victory for Ursuline in their Division III District Championship win over South Range last May. Lucente finished the season with a 2.47 earned run average and 67 strikeouts to go along with a 4-2 mark. Petrillo had a monster pitching performance against Mooney on Cinco de Mayo. He threw 7 and a third innings with 8 strikeouts to lead the Irish to a 3-2 victory. Petrillo also batted .326 with 21 runs scored and 12 runs batted in. In November, Drew Potesta signed his National Letter-of-Intent to play baseball next Spring at Lake Erie College. Potesta hit .385 with 15 RBIs. Schlosser hit .324 (8 RBIs) while Quattro batted .318 (13 RBIs) and third baseman Pullin slugged his way to a .312 average with 12 RBIs.

Outlook: The future is bright with Matt Weymer taking over for Sean Durkin after a historic 18-year run as the team’s head coach. Durkin led the Irish to 306 wins, a state championship (2000) and eleven district titles. Weymer comes over from Springfield where he led the Tigers to a 101-38 record over five seasons which included a pair of state runner-up finishes in New Middletown.
