LISBON, Ohio (WKBN) — A corrections officer at the Columbiana County Jail and two accomplices have been charged after investigators said they attempted to smuggle drugs into the facility Friday evening.
The Morning Journal reports that Corrections Officer Steven Michael Hamilton, 27, of Hammondsville, was caught bringing loose tobacco, as well as pills and marijuana cigarettes wrapped in black tape, into the facility. Investigators said the items were discovered hidden inside a brown Burger King bag.
Deputies interviewed Hamilton, who reportedly admitted to bringing them into the jail and that he was paid $50 to do so, according to the Morning Journal.
Hamilton was charged with illegal conveyance of a drug of abuse.
Byron Deem, 41, of Wellsville, and Lisa Orin, 46, of East Liverpool, have also been charged with complicity to conveying a drug of abuse onto the grounds of a detention facility.
Court records state Orin and Deem drove to the facility, and Deem gave the Burger King bag to Hamilton, along with the money.
The investigation is underway into inmates who may have been involved.
