Mahoning County blowing through Republican ballots

There are 212 precincts in Mahoning County

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – The Mahoning Board of Elections had to run off additional Republican ballots Tuesday afternoon as the turnout of voters requesting the Republican ticket exceeded expectations.

Mahoning County Board of Elections Director Tom McCabe said the state advised them to print off 20 percent more Republican ballots, but they ended up running 200 percent more.

Some polling stations ran low and had to be replenished, but no polling location ran out, McCabe said.

“I’ve been through five presidential cycles and I’ve never seen anything like this,” McCabe said. “We saw the early voting numbers and prepared.”

In Mahoning County, one out of every 11 voters requesting a Republican absentee ballot is actually registered as a Democrat. The same is being seen in Trumbull County.

Polls are open across Ohio until 7:30 p.m.

WKBN has the latest election results from the Mahoning Valley and around the state and country.
