BROOKFIELD, Ohio (WKBN) – Brookfield Police are investigating an incident Wednesday at Brookfield Middle School in which a sixth grader was caught bringing a weapon to school.
According to a police report, a gym teacher overheard two students talking about another student who had a weapon in his locker and who said not to tell anyone. Brookfield Local Schools Superintendent Tim Saxton said that student had brought the knife to school in a bookbag.
The student’s locker was immediately searched, and the 18-inch machete-style knife was recovered and turned over to Brookfield Police. The 13-year-old student was removed from school property.
Saxton issued the following statement surrounding the incident:
At no time were any students, faculty or staff in danger and the situation was handled without incident,” Saxton said. “Our school district followed all the proper safety and security protocols and will discipline the student according to the established code of conduct, Board of Education policy and Ohio Revised Code.
Saxton said the Brookfield Police Department will be turning information in the case over to the Trumbull County Prosecutor’s Office.
