2016 Poland Baseball Preview
Head Coach: Rich Murray, 12 seasons (205-102)
2015 Record: 28-3 (12-0), 1st place in AAC

More: High School Baseball previews from other teams

Key Losses: The Bulldogs lost their three (Dom Lipari) and four hitters (Ricky Svetlak) to graduation as well as their ace pitcher (Adam Knight), who pitched them to their first trip to the state tournament since 1983. Jake Hawkins, the team’s first baseman, also graduated last Spring.

Key Returnees: Senior second baseman Jared Burkert headlines a unit with tons of experience. Burkert batted .388 and was 7-0 on the mound. Shortstop Anthony Calcagni hit .459 in 2015 while scoring 48 runs and compiling 51 base hits. Pitcher & centerfielder Eric White came up big in the Regional Final (3-4, 2 RBIs) as well as the State Semifinal (2-3). White, for the season, batted a .463 averaged and accumulated a 4-0 mark on the hill. Matt Baker (P/1B/OF) tossed the Bulldogs to a 2-0 record as the team’s pitcher and hit .411 at the plate. Dan Klase, who also was a major contributor not just at the pitcher position but also batting, returns for his junior season.

Outlook: Coach Rich Murray points out that team speed and pitching will be two of the strengths which Poland will rely on in 2016. The Bulldogs must replace their corner infielders; likewise, it’ll be interesting to see who fills the role of Knight in the pitching rotation.
