WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) – Inspiring Minds, an after school program in the Valley, visited the Kent State University’s Trumbull campus on Wednesday.

Children heard lectures from Guion “Guy” Bluford, the first African American in space, as well as a professor from the university. They also had hands-on experience with chemistry, theater and aeronautics.

For some, this was their first time on a college campus.

Deryck Toles, CEO of Inspiring Minds, said it was important for the kids to have that experience.

“In order for young people to be successful and make different decisions now, they need to know what their future holds, and this exposure and boots-on-the-ground approach gives them that experience,” he said.

Around 40 students from the Valley made the trip.
