Fertilizing in early spring can lead to healthier lawns and gardens.

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – The sunshine and spring temperatures have a lot of people thinking about lawn care.

Mark Renstrom of Home Depot says shoppers have been stocking up on patio furniture, grass seed and plants. He says this time of year can be tricky, and to plant with caution.

“You just have to be careful of the cold weather here in Ohio, so that your buds don’t freeze.”

Fertilizing in early spring can lead to healthier lawns and gardens. The risk for frost will stick around through early May. Frost and cold weather can damage, or even kill, garden plants. Renstrom says if you do plant early, be prepared to cover your plants.

“A shade cloth…it could be burlap, something of a clothing material, and just wrap it loosely around the plant,” he said. “The key is to get the cover off when it warms up.”

If you’re itching to get out in the garden, some plants can survive cold snaps.

“Shrubs, perenials, hardy plants. A lot of people are planting their cold crop vegetables, cabbages, lettuces, kale, onions.”

He suggests waiting at least until the middle of April to plant the annuals, but says Easter is a great time to start fertilizing.

“There’s a four step process. You like to think of Easter, Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day when you are doing a lawn program…You kind of go around those holidays to put the steps down.”

Renstrom says early season care leads to a healthy lawn.
