Saint Bernadette’s Church opens time capsule

Newspaper clippings from the 1930s and a letter written by a previous priest were among items found in the time capsule

A time capsule, which was discovered in the Saint Bernadette Church's basement in Masury, was opened on Tuesday.

MASURY, Ohio (WKBN) – A time capsule, which was discovered in the Saint Bernadette’s Church in Masury, was opened on Tuesday.

The time capsule was found while removing Saint Bernadette’s cornerstone two weeks ago. The church is being sold or leased as the parish moves to a new building in Vienna, as part of a merger with St. Vincent de Paul Church.

Newspaper clippings from the 1930s, a letter written by a previous priest, old coins and a lucky stone were inside.

“We have our history. We had the oldest parishioner here. She was from Saint Bernadette’s, so she came out to see it,” said Father Frank Zanni.

As part of the merger, the churches will now be part of Saint Thomas the Apostle Parish, and its church will be located next to St. Vincent de Paul.
