VIENNA, Ohio (WKBN) – Tuesday, the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport announced that it will begin daily flights directly to Chicago starting in June.

Airport Aviation Director Dan Dickten said that he believes the flights will help fill a gap for Valley customers, who have often had to travel to Pittsburgh or Cleveland for a flight.

Aerodynamics, Inc. will run the flights, which will arrive at terminal 3 of the L Concourse at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago.

With 10 round-trip flights a week, and fares starting at $99 one-way, YNG is about to get a lot busier.

“We had looked at several different markets throughout the U.S. This one looked superior to any other market that we saw, mainly because, and I got to tell you, the support of the community here has been fantastic,” Aerodynamics CEO Darrell Richardson said.

Locals hope that the change will mean an economic boon to the Valley.

“As a local business owner, this really opens up the gateway to the rest of the country,” Cafaro Co-President Anthony Cafaro, Jr., said. “There’s challenges in having people come in through Cleveland, and Pittsburgh, and Akron/Canton.”

Youngstown-Warren Regional Chamber President and CEO Tom Humphries said just like the Allegiant Air services to Florida and South Carolina have helped the area, he expects the same with Chicago.

“Chicago is an important market,” he said. “It’s a gateway out west, and it’s a gateway toward the east.”

Sarah Boyarko, vice president of Economic Development with the Regional Chamber, said the Chicago flights mean businessmen and women no longer have to drive to Cleveland or Pittsburgh to travel, and those business people have said that they want these connecting flights.

“They’ve spoken, and their message is loud and clear,” she said. “They need daily flights to Chicago to support daily business activity and to grow in the future.”

Once you get to Chicago from Youngstown, the destinations are endless. In January 2016, the Chicago O’Hare International Airport averaged 938 daily flights to 155 different U.S. cities.

Tickets aren’t on sale just yet, but Aerodynamics Inc. who will be operating under a new name, says they expect sales to begin sometime the week of April 9.
