Work to build an exterior elevator at Potential Development High School begins.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Work on building an exterior elevator at Potential Development High School in Youngstown began on Wednesday.

This is one of the first steps in renovating the school on Market Street.

Executive Director Paul Garchar says they’ve been fundraising for months to pay for the renovations that are estimated to cost about $515,000. The next step will be classroom reconstruction.

“We’ve been working at this a long time. We are pleased to be able to break ground on the elevator. It will be an exterior elevator, so it will be able to access the second floor.”

Potential Development High School is one of only three in the state targeting high schoolers with special needs. The students range in age from 14 to 22 years old.
