Field fire in Bessemer creates huge smoke cloud

The thick black smoke could be seen around the Youngstown-Poland area

Branches caught fire in a field in Bessemer, creating a huge smoke cloud.

BESSEMER, Pa. (WKBN) – A fire in Bessemer created a smoke cloud that could be seen around the Youngstown-Poland area on Saturday afternoon.

The thick black smoke came from a fire that started in a field off of Beechwood Road.

Bessemer Fire Department Spokesman Lew Laughlin says it started when some people were burning trash and the wind took it, spreading it into the nearby field.

Six departments worked to bring it under control, but the fire still burned about 20 acres.

Laughlin says the same spot burned about three years ago, and urges people to use caution when burning during the dry season.
