STRUTHERS, Ohio (WKBN) – The “crazies” have officially arrived.
Habitat for Humanity of Mahoning Valley is hosting a “blitz build” this weekend at a house in Struthers.
What that means is the Habitat road trip crazies, a group from Virginia, will be building a house in two days.
The group started back in 1998 and has done more than 100 blitz builds. Lead crazy Tom Gerdy said it’s magic that goes into these weekends.
“When people leave the site they end up standing out in the street, and I’ve seen many of them stand in the street and start crying, realizing that the world is a kinder, gentler place because they came out,” Gerdy said. “And the way the crazies talk about it, we say, ‘You just have to listen to your heart and tell your hands what to do, and the world changes.”
Nearly 100 crazies will be out Friday to get the house ready for the Blitz Build to happen this weekend. Then, everything from the walls, floors, landscaping — everything to build a home — will be done in two days.
Be sure to tune into 27 First News Sunday Morning for an update on what the house looks like.
