STRUTHERS, Ohio (WKBN) – On Thursday, Mahoning County commissioners gave engineers the authorization to begin a long and expensive bridge project between Lowellville and Struthers.

Engineer Randy Partika says the bridge on Lowellville Road over Hines Run is one of the worst in the county. He doesn’t think much of the bridge can be saved.

“We’re going to try and salvage the center pier. We might salvage it. The engineers are going to look at it but the most economic thing is probably to take it out.”

The design of the bridge alone will cost $190,000 and the total project is going to be close to $1 million.

The project is so expensive, in part, because of how important the bridge is to Lowellville and Struthers. There aren’t any detours the county can post for trucks. Because of this, the project will have to be done in stages.

“There’s a steep grade going south up to Route 224 that [trucks] really can’t traverse,” Partika said. “We have to keep it open to all traffic. We’re going to do half the bridge at a time. We will do one lane, we’ll control the other side with signals so traffic can’t get through.”

Completing the project this way will add time and money, but it will be safer. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2019.
