CANFIELD, Ohio (WKBN) – Those wishing to bike through Mill Creek Metro Parks Hike and Bike Trail can rent bikes in order to do so starting Sunday.
The trail runs 11 miles from Western Reserve Road in Canfield to the Trumbull County Line.
Bikes can be rented from a building located at the intersection of Kirk Road and the Mill Creek Metro Parks Hike and Bike Trail.
Bryan Ashman, one of the co-owners of the Trailside Bicycle Company in Canfield, is going to be operating the facility to rent the bikes.
“What we’re hoping to offer here at this facility is an extension of our rental program we have right now at our Canfield location. With the building being right along the bike trail, it’s a very heavily traveled trail access point. We’re going to offer a great line of rental bicycles from Cannondale; we have a full fleet of them, and they’re a very comfortable bicycle. We’re also doing adult tricycles. We’ll have children’s trail bikes, the pull behind trailers, child seat all available for rent,” Ashman said.
“This collaboration is a prime example of how Mill Creek MetroParks can partner with local, private companies in expanding recreational opportunities to the community in a cost effective manner. The guys at Trailside Bicycle Company have developed a fine reputation within the biking community and we look forward to having them on the MetroParks Bikeway.” said Aaron Young, Executive Director for Mill Creek MetroParks.
People expressed interest for something like this along the trail.
“With this Kirk Road trailhead and this beautiful facility the park has here, we felt it was underutilized, and, when the park approached us, said they were considering offering the service and bringing it to the trailhead, we were very, very excited, and the response has been incredible,” Ashman said.
The rental facility will be open seven days a week during the primary season. Rental prices average $9 to $15 an hour depending on the bicycle style.
The new rental location will be open Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sundays 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with the last rental one hour prior to close. The facility will also offer emergency repair services for any cyclists out on the Metro Parks Bikeway in need of assistance.
May 1 is also the start of National Bike Month. Trailside Bicycle Company will be starting the month with two group rides; one will be a 40-mile group ride at 9:00 a.m., the other a 10:00 a.m. family ride. Both rides will start at Trailside’s flagship location at 410 W. Main Street in Canfield with a coffee social. The family ride will stop at Kirk Road Trailhead and then return to the Canfield shop.
