NILES, Ohio (WKBN) – The safety director for the city of Niles resigned Thursday. It is the latest move in a series of events for a city that is facing financial hardship.
Safety Director Paul Hogan resigned citing health concerns. His last day is May 19.
Hogan’s resignation comes just three days after city treasurer Bob Swauger resigned. Swauger said he needed to focus more on his full-time job as branch manager of a local bank.
Mayor Thomas Scarnecchia said he is sorry to see Hogan leave his position and that he did a “great” job.
“I’m very sad about that. No benefits, just a lot of hard work. That is what we had,” Scarnecchia said.
The mayor said he will likely have the service director take on the duties of the safety director, which is responsible for the police and fire departments. Layoffs were conducted in both of those departments a few months ago.
Scarnecchia said he hasn’t received any formal applications for the treasurer’s job, but anticipates more interest by the next city council meeting, which is scheduled for May 18.
